Halloween, Alaska - Dance By Accident

This song by Halloween, Alaska is pretty mellow. Despite this the band has created a track that is still interesting and enjoyable to listen to. I have to say I really like the lead singer's voice. Also see 'In Order' at the bottom of the page, a track just as good if not better from one of their older albums.

Halloween, Alaska are a Minnesota based band. The Quartet have released a number of EPs and Albums. Dance By Accident is from their latest album, 'All Night the Calls Came In', released earlier this year.

Whitley - More Than Life

Every once in while I think it's important to post an old song that I never stop loving. This time I am showing Whitley's 'More Than Life'. This song is one of my favorite chillout songs and I would be surprised if it didn't become one of yours.

More Than Life

Take a read of the story below, it's an interesting story written by the band's founder.

"When I was five years old I watched two television documentaries that were instrumental in forming the way I think. One show was about Mammoths, and the other was about scientific experiments concerning the human mind. Both documentaries were interesting enough. In the Mammoth documentary there was a time lapse showing a dead Mammoth returning to dust. At the time it only bothered me slightly. Shortly after, the second documentary taught me how the human mind stores memory, language and personality.

A revelation occurred in my mind:
‘If the Mammoth’s brain became dust, and his life was stored in there…then what point is there to life? I won’t remember any of my friends or family when I die. I won’t remember anything that I have learned…I won’t remember anything at all. I may as well not have ever existed.’

I ran to my mother and cried uncontrollably, as if to mourn the death of myself. As a woman who cares for cancer patients and is surrounded by death for most of her life, I thought she could explain it to me. I was horrified to learn that she couldn’t explain what happened when you died. My opinion stayed much the same for 16 years or so, and for a kid, I suppose I devoted an unhealthy amount of time trying to figure out the purpose of my existence. All I could have been and all I would have been was lost in time…it’s not hard to read between the lines."

That's a lot of text, but what I found really interesting about that is, he watched a documentary on Mammoths. One of his albums was called, 'Go Forth, Find Mammoth'. He also mentions he was "lost in time" which is the name of one of his singles. It is a very interesting story that explores how the band met. To check out the rest go to Dew Process' Website (their record label). Some of their other songs are below.

The Grates - Sweet Dreams

The music video of The Grates' 'Sweet Dreams' was released just yesterday. It's a pretty sweet video with some crazy coloured blood effects. It's a cool song with a great chorus to match. This is definately The Grates' best song to date.

Recently The Grates have been living in New York while they worked on their third album, 'Secret Rituals'. This album was released earlier this year. The Grates are touring nationally in October and November this year.

Hot Chip - I Feel Better

To be honest I had no intentions of blogging about this song. It was my favourite song a while ago but this post is less about the song and more about the video clip. As much as I love the song I just saw the video clip for the first time and boy is it interesting. It isn't just interesting, it's awesome!! I will let you have a look to form your own opinions. Album of the Week no. 7: Junk of the Heart

James Blake & Bon Iver - Fall Creek Boys Choir

James Blake is one abstract dude. His songs and music offer something that I think no other artist offers. This song is a combination of him and Bon Iver, who, together, make a mean combo. James Blake's style really shows in this great joint effort by the two.

This song was released today on iTunes but has been on YouTube for a week now. To have a look at the Bon Iver's new album go to one of my older posts.

Snakadaktal - Chimera

This song has a pretty slow tempo. It is almost like a chilled out pop song, an odd blend that has been well executed. The chorus is pretty catchy. Enjoy!

Washington - Holy Moses

This song by Washington is very peculiar. It offers a very unique sound. Despite how abstract it is I still enjoy it. Washington is one of the few female artists I really enjoy. It's her latest single being released on August 5th of this year. Definately fresh.

Megan Washington was born in Papa New Guinea. She moved to Queensland in Australia at age 11. Later in persuit of a music career she moved to Melbourne as there was a greater demand for artists there. When she moved she had next to no money. Her song 'Clementine' was written on a ukelele as she could not even afford a guitar! Washington's story is encouraging to many wannabe artists. I will put some of her other songs below:

Album of the Week no. 5: Rain on the Humming Wire

The Panics released their latest album just over a week ago now. It is an extremely enjoyable album. The standout song, without doubt, is 'Majesty'. The album was written in England and recorded in USA. Both a long way from their hometown of Melbourne. The band have recently announced a tour around Australia. For dates please visit The Panics' Website.

Unfortunately 'Majesty' is the only song of theirs which is on YouTube. So to check out some samples and buy the album visit the album's iTunes page.

As I said at the top of the post The Panics' hometown is Melbourne, Australia. Rain on the Humming Wire was released on July 29, 2011 through Dew Process. Their previous album, Cruel Guards, was very successful. I think this album will be even better than their last!

Black Light Dinner Party - Small Boxes

I recently found this song and I am really enjoying it. It reminds me a lot of a band called Young Love. They have a very similar sound, that's definately a good they as Young Love's album was my favourite album for a very long time.

Black Light Dinner Party are very mysterious. There is barely any information about them on the internet. They are not on iTunes either (the Australian iTunes anyway). Luckily you can download their songs off their Soundcloud account for free. I will post one of their other songs down below for those who want to hear more.

Boy & Bear - Milk & Sticks + NEW ALBUM COMING SOON

This is my second post on Boy & Bear and if you ask me, they deserve it. This is their latest single, released just the other week. I showed this band to a friend and they described them as a better version of Mumford & Sons. I think he described them perfectly. They have a really good sound and this single definitely shows consistency. They also recently announced that a new album is to be released on August 5th. I cannot wait!

Scouting For Girls - Love How it Hurts

I have been a fan of Scouting for Girls for a number of years. I found this song from a routine check of whether they have any new songs. This song, recently released makes for some good listening. It is worth listening to and definately worth having on your iPod and also check out their albums. I will put some of their other noteworthy songs at the bottom.

Scouting for girls formed in 2005 in London. They have released two albums. Which includes some other ripper singles! They have reached some pop success in the UK but to everywhere else they are still a pretty indie band.

Sparkadia - Talking Like I'm Falling Down Stairs

The first thing you should know is that this song is not Sparkadia's latest single, but it is my favourite (just ahead of their song 'China'). The first time I saw and heard of Sparkadia was a while ago. They were a supporting act to a band I was seeing. They actually played the same songs as what they have just released. Their song 'Mary' (their latest single) has seen some success putting them back in the limelight. I personally really enjoy this song, but the video does not do it justice. I am sure you will enjoy it anyway.

Sparkadia formed in Sydney in 2004. They have released two albums and an EP. They have toured with many bands as supporting acts including 'Little Red', 'Tegan and Sara' and 'Ben Lee'.

Album of the Week no. 4: Passenger

This isn't such a new album. Maybe a year old... but it is fantastic! It is titled 'Flight of the Crow'. Almost all of Passenger's songs have been featuring other bands that I love. They have created music that is brilliant and easy to listen to. I know that this type of album will get plenty of listening to.

Passenger is the brain child of a 26 year old English man, Mike Rosenberg. Passenger have released a couple albums. They have teamed up with many big name artists in the indie scene.

Gotye - Somebody That I Used to Know

This song was released earlier this month. At first I was hesitant whether I liked it or not. I think that had a lot to do with how unique and abstract this song and video clip is. After listening to the song a few times over the course of the week I have come to the conclusion that I quite like the song. I have also decided that the video makes this song a lot better. It features Kimbra who also featured in one of Miami Horror's singles.

Gotye is pronounced "Gore-ti-yeah". He was born in Belguim but grew up in Melbourne, Australia. He has released a number of albums. His latest is due out on the 19th of August 2011. It will be interesting to see what that album will be like. I will be sure to keep you posted.

#1 Australian Album of All Time - Odyssey No. 5

Powderfinger's Oddysey No. 5 was recently voted on Triple J as the number one Australian album of all time. It featured the hits My Happiness and These Days. I saw them live in their last ever performance in Melbourne and it was fantastic! I must admit that I didn't think this album would be #1 but I sure did want it to be.

My Happiness

Up and Down and Back Again (Live)

The Kooks - Is It Me NEW SINGLE

It is finally here. The long awaited release of The Kooks brand new single and boy, does it deliver. I have really missed The Kooks the past few years. They have managed to produce a typical Kooks song, that satisfies my hunger for them. I am so happy they are back, now I just have to wait for their new album, recently given the title 'Junk of the Heart', which to be released in September this year.

The Kooks are originally from Brighton in the UK. After a great debut album, 'Inside In / Inside Out' featuring the smash hit Naive, The Kooks began to receive a cult following (from people like me). Their second album was just as successful, 'Konk' debuted at number 1 on the album charts. Now they are doing the finishing touches to their third album due for release on September 12th (13th for the US).

The Republic Tigers - Merrymake it With Me

The Republic Tigers featured in my 'Chillout' compilation. This, Merrymake it With Me is their latest single. It sounds a bit happier than their previous songs I have listened to. Often it takes time for me to appreciate and enjoy a song, in this case I immediately like it. Definately a good sign!

The Republic Tigers are based in Kansas City. They released their first full length album in 2008. Just recently in April they released a brand new EP titled No Man's Land. Hopefully The Republic Tigers will become bigger on the Indie Rock scene.

Phoenix - Everything is Everything

Often Phoenix's old songs are forgotten. Their highly successful album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix was eye catching but so are some of their older songs. This song, Everything is Everything, is very catchy. It is has a bit of an abstract sound but that only makes it more memorable.

Phoenix are a band from Paris. They have released a number of albums and have toured all over the world. Recently they have seen world wide success with their singles 1901 and Lasso.

Of Monsters & Men - Little Talks

I am really enjoying this song. It is very unique, rarely have I seen a band that uses the accordion that I enjoy. It's pretty chilled but is still pretty optimistic, a rare blend that when done well makes a killer combo.

Of Monsters And Men, formed in 2010, are a six-piece indie/folk band from Reykjavík, Iceland. They are the winner of Músiktilraunir 2010 which is Icelandic battle of the bands. Try pronouncing the member's names, I know I can't, Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir, Ragnar Þórhallsson, Brynjar Leifsson, Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson, Kristján Páll Kristjánsson, Árni Guðjónsson.

Album of the Week no. 3: Living on the Edge of Time

This weeks album of the week is Yuksek's Living on the Edge of Time. This album is a stark contrast to the previous album of the week. On a Train is my favorite song from the album and is definitely noteworthy but another worth looking at is Off the Wall.

The Wombats - Our Perfect Disease

Just days ago The Wombats released a new video clip for the song Our Perfect Disease. This an exclusive to Triple J, an Australian radio station. In order to view the video clip you need the link, luckily I have it and I am sharing it to you

I saw this song live and the atmosphere was electric! It was a sold out gig. This is The Wombats fifth single from their new album. Their album is definitely must hear if you like high energy, indie pop (an odd combo of words to put together but in this case very true) songs.

The Wombats are from Liverpool and have released two albums, A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation and The Wombats proudly present... This Modern Glitch. Both have been very successful. The second of which was released in April this year. The first single from This Modern Glitch, Tokyo, went number one in many countries across the globe. The Wombats currently touring Europe and will tour England soon.

Chillout Compilation

I am aware that some of these songs are old. Some as many as four years. Despite the age of the songs together they make a powerful combo. This is what I have title as 'Chillout'. It is what it says, it is what I listen to when I want to chillout. I only compiled this a couple of months ago. I was originally not too happy with the sound. But the more I listened to it, the more I enjoyed it. Now it has become my compilation of choice when I want to listen for around 45mins to a 1hr.

A couple of standout songs would have to be The Republic Tigers' 'Building & Mountains'.  Just like the playlist the song has grown on me. It has quickly risen through the ranks to become one of my favourite songs at the moment. The chorus is very catchy...

The other song I would say is a stand out is Radical Face's 'Welcome Home'. This is probably the most popular and well known song on the playlist. It is two years old and has just under five million YouTube hits!! It has a pretty unique sound and boy, does it sound good.

Have a listen to all or some of the songs. Each song is linked to YouTube, so you don't even need to search for it. NO EXCUSES. Enjoy!

Paolo Nutini NEW ALBUM COMING SOON

Don’t be Hasty: Paolo Nutini confirms to STV that new album is on its way

"Scottish singer Paolo Nutini sent festival goers home with a smile on their face on Sunday as he closed the RockNess festival in joyous fashion - and promptly left us with a hint of what’s to come."

Paolo Nutini has indicated in the interview in the link (if you can understand his accent) that his album "can’t be too long away now". This is great news!! I am a major fan and have been for years. I look forward to when the album is finally released. I will be sure to keep all my viewers up to date on this one.

Album of the Week no. 2: Head and the Heart

One week ago today I started the album of the week box. It sits in the top right hand corner of the blog. This is the first post on the album of the week despite being the second album. Last week I blogged about Bon Iver which then featured on my new idea of album of the week. The idea has now devoloped into what will be a weekly thing.

This week it is another self titled album, The Head and the Heart. This was released early this year in January. The Head and the Heart offer an earthy, relaxing voice in an equally relaxing album.

Josh Pyke - No One Wants a Lover + NEW ALBUM COMING SOON

It is the much anticipated announcement we have all been waiting for. Josh Pyke has a new single and album coming soon. The single came out only days ago and I can't wait for the new album. The album is titled Only Sparrows and is scheduled for release August 2011.

Josh Pyke's first album was released in 2005. It was a real breakthrough album. Pyke released a number of albums after this. In 2008 Chimney’s Afire (his last album), equaled the success of its predecessors. Chimney’s Afire debuted at #3 on the ARIA chart, won an ARIA Award and has also achieved Gold sales. His latest album to be released should be a ripper!!

Bright Eyes - Shell Games

This is one of those bands that isn't your favorite but you love listening to. The track on the album is slightly different to the one on the music video. Personally I prefer the one on the album. But take a look at this one. You should still enjoy it.

Bright Eyes have released a number of albums. This is from their latest, The People's Key, which was released at the start of this year.

I posted this one week ago and since it has become my favorite song without doubt. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.

Miami Horror - Summersun

This is Miami Horror's fifth single in their album Illumination. Miami Horror are starting the Summersun Tour of Australia at the end of this month. This is the last time they will perform in Australia before relocating to the USA. Absolutely devastating news! If you get a chance listen to their album as everyone of their songs are great.

Miami Horror's hometown is Melbourne, Australia. The five boys in the band are planning to relocate to L.A later this year. They have just completed a world tour that has gained them major international success.

This is Bon Iver's latest track. It is part of his new album which is only days away. If it is anything like their last album I will get a lot of listening out of it.

Bon Iver has released an album and an EP. He became quite well known particularly for his songs Blood Bank and Skinny Love.

Boy and Bear - Feeding Line

This is Boy and Bear's latest single. My favorite of theirs so far. Having been put on YouTube only 1 week ago it is very current. I can tell this will soon become on my top 25 most played songs.

Boy and Bear consist of 5 Sydney boys. They released their debut EP With Emperor Antarctica just over a year ago.
